P816: Undergraduate research laboratory experience projects as a platform for designing new inter-disciplinary upper level chemistry experiments
Research laboratory experience projects (RLEs) have been introduced as an opportunity for undergraduate chemistry students in their final year to gain experience working in either a research or teaching lab under the direct supervision of the principal investigator. In the teaching labs, the RLE students work with the goal of converting published research into procedures that can be used as the foundation for the development of new undergraduate experiments. Results from recent RLE projects, in which the synthesis, characterization and kinetic studies (thermo gravimetric analysis) of Ag(I) and Cu(I) lutidine complexes act as a platform to combine inorganic and physical chemistry skills, will be discussed. The kinetic data obtained was utilized to explore the effect of a ligand’s basicity on the stability of these complexes. The successes and challenges encountered to date will also be described.
