A newly redesigned Physical Chemistry course includes having students “do” physical chemistry to learn the topic. Students begin by learning how to use Excel and then examining the behavior of non-ideal gases. Thermodynamics is a series of modeling exercises using Excel to analyze heat capacity data as a function of temperature, building integrated functions of Cp(T) and comparing data for heat, enthalpy, and entropy to the calculated Cp(T) functions. The structure of the course, lessons learned, and student responses will be presented.
