P616: Understanding the organization of the periodic table
A new web based activity allows you to place atoms with valence electrons into the periodic table to discover the underlying organization of the chemists’ graphic organizer. All blocks of the periodic table are included, but the atoms are sorted into the main group, transition metal, and lanthanide and actinide blocks separately. Images include a variety of “guises” of the periodic table to make visible different representations. The overall activity is designed as a “game” and presents students with a “certificate” as well as printable images of the periodic table. This activity, and its physical manipulatives version, allow students to understand the periodic table organization, how to read the information it contains by virtue of element position, and how the periodic table can be used to predict molecular formula and structure. Use of this activity and how it affects student learning along with student feedback will be discussed.
