Soft baits used in fishing are an amazingly life-like material that has revolutionized fishing world wide. However, there is little that is easily accessible to undergraduate students to understand the chemistry of these materials. Using FTIR to characterize the soft baits and simple melting range analysis to define the heating profile, a kid-safe activity/ demonstration was developed.
