Two sections of Analytical Chemistry allow for a unique experience in method writing and interlaboratory comparison. Each section is asked to develop an analytical method to quantify the mass percent of a dye in a salt and sand mixture. After execution of their own method, the sections swap methods. Analysis includes a comparison of the accuracy, the intra-assay precision, and intermediate precision of the methods. Discussion of insights and improvements to each method help students reflect on the process of method writing.
