High school chemistry teachers face the growing challenge of providing rigorous content while meeting new literacy requirements. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) incorporate the relevant Common Core State Standards’ (CCSS) literacy requirements regarding writing and reading in content fields. To meet these standards, teachers face the task of finding accurate articles with an appropriate reading level for their students. ChemMatters articles are written for high school chemistry students and present real-world contexts for chemistry concepts. The articles are written at an appropriate reading level and the content is vetted by ACS members. Find out how to use these valuable resources to meet NGSS and CCSS standards and teach or reinforce chemistry content using ChemMatters. Sample articles to be discussed include chemistry, biology and environmental topics related to the Titanic, green plastics, and foods.
