P991: Inspiring community college students into the sciences through early research
In recent years Western Michigan University partnered with local community colleges to inspire students interested in the sciences to participate in research. The goals of the program were to increase student understanding of the nature of science by providing them with opportunities to work with faculty and graduate students in research laboratories. Each year 15-20 participants were selected. As part of the program several training workshops were implemented in order to prepare the students for a successful research experience. This presentation will highlight some of the lessons learned from the workshops and how they can be applied to provide students with the tools required to succeed in research. We will also describe methods used for program assessment.
