P485: Math skills and student success in General Chemistry: Initial assessment and optional vs. required interventions
Overall student success in General Chemistry at Moravian College is linked to initial student math skills. Since 2010 we have electronically administered a short, timed, math skills assessment quiz at the very start of the semester and tried several interventions to help improve student math skills. Our overall goal is to see increased student success in the course and improved retention in the two-semester sequence. Two intervention plans that were strongly recommended to students (but not required of them) were found to have such small numbers of participants that effects of the intervention on student success was difficult to analyze. Results from our most recent student intervention that was required of students will be presented and a new institutional program for 2014, a summer bridge course on quantitative skills for incoming students, will be described.
