In my sixth year of teaching at an undergraduate institution I have just recently had the privilege of being awarded promotion and applying for tenure. When I first started I thought the two went hand in hand. I was wrong. It is easy to say though that just when you think you have it all together you don’t. The more I tried to figure out what I should or shouldn’t be doing to more confused I became. This talk will highlight what was worthwhile to stress about and what I wasted valuable time worrying about that was never an issue.

Quantitative Analysis Laboratory is designed to give students a fundamental understanding of basic analytical techniques. Many of these techniques have been replaced by developments in technology and allow for faster analysis times. However, it is imperative that students learn the fundamental skills necessary to perform accurate analysis, proper record keeping techniques and the importance of correct data evaluation. Are the traditional methods of teaching quantitative analysis still the best method to teach our students? Are the traditional experiments utilizing titrations and gravimetric analysis still necessary? Are there more current methods available to teach our students accuracy and precision and fundamental lab techniques? There are many approaches used to teaching the lab for Quantitative Analysis and through this talk I hope to foster of discussion of what works and why.
