I’m currently finishing up year 4 of a 6-year tenure-track position, and there have been many bumps and bruises along the road. Each year I get reviewed, either my department or dean recommends probationary action because I’m “not meeting expectations.” Despite bringing in over $500K in external money, being published with student authors in JCE, and receiving teaching awards from the Chancellor’s Office and Provost, my progress “lags behind that of my peers.” I’ll be focusing my talk on the things I’ve learned so far and how I’m positioning myself better within the university so I can spend more time focusing on teaching and mentoring my students. I’ll be mentioning teaching, research, and service opportunities that admins are looking for, and I’ll discuss strategies new faculty can employ at the outset to put yourself in a good position to succeed for yourself and for your students. To all the grad students, post-docs, and rookie faculty: don’t give up hope! Cultural shift is happening albeit at a geological timescale.

Several studies have shown how Supplemental Instruction (SI) affects students in what are deemed “high risk” classes; however, there has been little to no study on how SI affects the SI leaders themselves. SI Leaders are employed in order to facilitate a learning environment that is based upon group cooperation in order to develop good study habits and attain a better understanding of the subject matter all without the presence of an instructor. In order to be an effective SI leader, one must have the following qualities: leadership, patience, and organization. Did these students already have these qualities in them? If they did, did this improve over the course of their work? If they did not, have these traits been acquired over time? Perhaps these qualities are evident in the actions of their lives now. The theoretical framework in this study is Hermeneutics, which is a way of providing a voice to those who do not have a voice (the SI leaders). SI leaders targeted in this study will be from three different disciplines (math, biology, and chemistry) forming two distinctive subgroups in each discipline (new and veteran). Three interviews per person were conducted throughout the year to monitor their progression. This presentation will cover the affective development of the SI leaders during their first semester in the program at a PUI.
