Our department is happy to share some insight into its criteria for the evaluation of graduate student applications. For example, there is no unique formula to assess applications. While we request GPA, general GRE scores, and a GRE subject score, there are no hard cutoff values for any of these. For example, while the average accepted domestic student in 2014 had a GPA of 3.78 and while we typically do not accept students with GPAs lower than 3.3, there are exceptions. We recognize that there are institutions that grade more critically than others and do not hold that against their students. While a GRE subject score is not absolutely required, only 8% of accepted students in 2014 lacked the subject score, while 26% of the rejected applications lacked a subject score.
