As educators we are to “be” numerous things for the students we teach. We are to “be” advisors, entertainers, writers and educational reform advocates in addition to being chemists. This presentation will address qualities to “be” expected and possibly unexpected during a career as a community college chemistry educator.

Over the past five years, there has been much discussion regarding the appropriate teaching load for chemistry faculty in the higher education landscape. As ACS prepares to revise its Guidelines for Chemistry in Two-Year College Programs, the topic of teaching loads and contact hours has to be addressed in order for the Guidelines to remain current with the needs of the community. In this interactive presentation, members of the SOCED Task Force on the Revision of the Guidelines will present current and proposed ACS policies regarding teaching loads and contact hours and solicit input from the audience on what ACS can do to support chemistry educators. Come share your successes, challenges, and insights on teaching loads and contact hours at your institution.
