After several years of offering a combined 5 credit hour lecture/laboratory curriculum for general chemistry, Indiana University has recently opted to divide the lab and lecture into separate courses- a three credit lecture course (C117) and a two credit lab course (C127). Reasons for the split will be discussed. Creating a new course is always a time to re-evaluate the content of a course. Differences between the new course and old course will be highlighted, including efforts to introduce discovery or project based experiments into the lab curriculum. Initial attempts to assess the changes through the use of the chemical concept inventory will also be discussed.
