Students in the second semester Physical Chemistry laboratory course are required to complete an independent project. Students must choose a project that is based on original research or a physical chemistry laboratory published in the Journal of Chemical Education. Students are asked to choose a topic or laboratory that could lead to future physical chemistry labs. The students must write a proposal to solicit funds from the Chemistry Department to allow them to purchase the materials needed for the independent project. Similar to a grant submission, students in the physical chemistry lab preform a peer review to identify scientific merit and make suggestions for funding. Upon receiving funding the students complete the independent projects and present their projects.
