Traditional online homework systems give everyone the same problems regardless of student preparation or need. ALEKS uses artificial intelligence to determine problems for each individual student based on their individual level of preparedness and current knowledge. Thus, students that are ready for the current topic will get rewarded with fewer problems, freeing up time to devote to other things. Students that are not as well prepared will start with prerequisite topics to ensure they are ready to work on the current topics, allowing them to get the most out of assigned problems. At the University of Toledo we have implemented ALEKS in our General Chemistry program and I will discuss our implementation, results, and student views.
