P808: Teaching atoms first without knowing about atoms first: An experience in rearranging ideas
The college and chemistry department I joined have both allowed a strong sense of academic freedom. I had always felt that an “atoms first” sequence was the best way for me to approach introductory and general chemistry, even though I did not know that others had thought of an “atoms first” sequence. I will share why I decided to take this approach and some of the smaller issues I think the atoms first approach addresses. I will also share my experience in rearranging the order of the textbook to teach the atoms first approach (and some of the minor problems that arise from rearranging the textbook). Finally, I will discuss how I was able to organize a lab sequence that fit well with the atoms first approach.
