P275: How do college students draw Lewis structures?
College students draw Lewis structures of simple molecules and ions with an online tool. The Flash software built into this online tool automatically determines whether a student has selected and arranged correct components (atoms, electrons, and charges). In addition, every operation step of adding and moving these components, as well as clicking links of help materials is recorded by the software for later analysis. The difficulties of different types of structures are compared and students’ strategies of drawing the Lewis structures are analyzed.
