The General Chemistry I teaching laboratory at the University of Texas San Antonio has been transitioning to an increasingly electronic format over the past few years. The first stage involved creating online pre-lab and post-lab assignments using the LMS provided by the University. The second stage dealt with gradual implementation of an electronic lab notebook (ELN) by LabArchives for all the labs which consist of primarily first and second year students. While this exercise has resulted in a tremendous reduction in the amount of time collecting assignments, grading, etc., encouraging results on student learning and performance have been achieved. This presentation will focus on our experience during implementation and will present some quantitative data comparing the performance of students using an ELN to students using traditional paper laboratory notebooks.
