Students taking AP and IB chemistry are expected to interpret situations based upon relevant data. Often their only encounter with this data is in the form of homework problems, classroom examinations, or on the AP or IB exam itself. Generating and evaluating data from experiments that have clear and interesting connections to the natural world are crucial in improving the understanding of fundamental concepts at a high level. This talk will provide suggestions for the structuring of contextual labs as well as several examples. Examples will include simple labs that require little prep to more complex experiments that utilize advanced lab techniques and require multiple lab hours.
