P114: Flexible tools for student learning in online learning environments
Students in introductory-level courses frequently come from a diverse set of education backgrounds and consequently require different types and levels of assistance. This talk presents the Deep Help framework, based on the principles of Knowledge Space Theory, which parallels the expected conceptual development of the learner. This method works by providing assistance for students at the time they are having difficulty, in a manner that minimizes the extraneous cognitive load. It also provides the means for individual students to get multiple levels of assistance, without forcing them through a one-size-fits-all approach.
