P9: Chemistry in Art: Transformation of the chemistry curriculum
A cCWCS Chemistry in Art workshop was the inspiration for a complete reimagining of the introductory chemistry classes at Whitman College. It began with the creation of a non-majors Chemistry in Art class, and expanded to include the entire general chemistry introductory sequence. Now, nine years later, the non-majors class is full (with a three-year waitlist), high-interest chemistry in art topics make up the majority of the laboratory experiences in the general chemistry sequence, and selected students participate in independent study. Over 2500 students have passed through these classes and their responses have been overwhelmingly positive, consistently scoring 5+ out of 6 on course evaluations. The logistics of implementing this program, and the advantages of participating first as an attendee and then as an instructor in the summer cCWCS workshops will be discussed.
