After attending a workshop in Forensic Science in June of 2011, I was able to take the lessons I learned and use them to invigorate the labs being taught at my institution. I was able to directly use some of the specific labs taught at the workshop in my first semester back and also able to use the pedagogical mindset learned there to generate more interest in the chemical concepts being taught in lab. As a result of the forensic science workshop, I was also able to develop a lab practicum that had the students use skills they learned over the course of the semester in identifying unknown substances. It was such a successful endeavor that my fellow instructors are now looking to adopt it as a part of the curriculum for general chemistry.
