Chemistry degree plans are rigorous and can provide little time for additional coursework that would prove useful to students in a field in which an interdisciplinary focus becomes more important with each passing day. With this in mind, we have been developing a multi-week, upper-divisional instrumentation lab in which students build a working spectrometer. The spectrometer is built from a plastic building set and is operated by a microcontroller. This lab is intended to introduce many students to design, electronics, optics, and programming with a microcontroller.
