Students in my high school chemistry classes have produced biodiesel fuel from both new and used vegetable oil. The creation of the fuel takes several days and is followed by a visit to our automotive technology department. The auto tech instructor explains the history of the diesel engine and describes the differences between the combustion engine and diesel engines. He then pours our diesel fuel into an engine and fires it up! The students are thrilled when they see the products of their chemistry laboratory experiment successfully running an engine.
