This presentation will demonstrate a new organic chemistry drawing tool on the IOS platform that incorporated text-to-speech accessibility at the inception of the drawing tool. Reasons for justification as to why it is important for students with visual impairments to be able to communicate organic chemical structural information in a non-visual way will be discussed. This new tool was developed as collaboration between Heartland Community College located in Normal, Illinois, and Independence Science, an access technology company associated with the Purdue University Research Park in West Lafayette, Indiana. This effort was funded by the National Science Foundation. This interface uses the Voice Over text-to-speech feature available on all Apple products to speak specific element identification and angle of bond features in pre-drawn structures, or structures drawn by the student with the visual impairment. Methodologies for drawing organic chemistry mechanisms are also included in this application.
