An interactive web site and online crystal structure database dedicated to teaching solid-state chemistry have been developed. WordPress, an open-access content management system, is employed for the site. Jmol is used to embed interactive, 3-D models within the crystal structure pages of the database for interactive viewing of structures. A Chemical Construct Module (atom type, size, color, etc.) was coded to streamline publishing structures onto a php website containing the database through the integration of .jsp (Java Server Pages). An interactive CoverFlow-like JavaScript application called “Content Flow” was embedded within the site as the front page of the database. The project required script-based integration and mapping of web folders in a hosting environment running a dedicated private instance of Tomcat. After launch, statistics on site usage will be collected automatically for used in assessment. The development of this online educational resource will be discussed and the site will be demonstrated.
