We present a laboratory exercise for the physical chemistry curriculum which involves the study of solvatochromism and photo-induced intramolecular electron transfer. Students measure the absorption and fluorescence spectra of Coumarin dyes in different solvents and analyze the data for each species to determine the difference in the dipole moment between the ground and excited electronic states. This exercise teaches students about the role of solvent dynamics in photo-induced intramolecular electron transfer processes.
