Freshmen General Chemistry Labs at the University of Kentucky service a large number of students from diverse backgrounds and interest as part of the UKCore curriculum. In recent years, the rising numbers of students in General Chemistry Lab have led to an increase in the number of plagiarism cases being investigated and prosecuted in the labs. In hopes of reducing the number of cases, the lab experiment, “Scientific Writing and Integrity” was introduced into the first lab meeting to bring attention to how professional scientists as a community of practice, the University, and course policy mirror one another in terms of the expectation of writers using citations in their work. Initial implementation of the lab has seen the number of instances of blatant plagiarism reduced by over 50%.
